Wednesday 15th June 2022

Alarm at 0730. Got up around 0800 and made tea. Porridge. Packed a lunch. Aki off on her bike to Rowing Club. I headed eastward once more, stopping at Tesco in Southend to grab a coffee, then on to Rochford and Canewdon, before double back down to Basildon. Came across a statue in the middle of the housing development in Southend...entitled "Our Eric", I thought at first the locals had taken Eric Morecambe for one of their own, but it turned out to be Eric Kirkham Cole, the founder of EKCO, an electronics development company in the 1930s which became Southend's biggest employer...apparently he had a hand in coming up with the electronic gizmo that broke the Enigma Code! Had my lunch in a Sainsbury's car park in Woodham Ferrers before heading on to Burnham on Crouch...always reminds me of the Ian Dury lyric to Billericay Dickie: "Oh golly, oh gosh/Come and lie on the couch/With a nice bit of posh/From Burnham on Crouch". Can't see that there's much posh about the place! On to Colchester, and ended in a village called Thorpe le Soken, near Clacton-on-Sea. Turned the car around and headed for home. Got in at 1930. Aki had warmed up the aubergine parmigiana lasagne for dinner. Did my ironing. Early bath and bed...done 230 miles today! Got to drive to Swansea tomorrow!!!
