Monday 20th June 2022

Woke around 0830. Aki got up and made tea. I got up and sat at the computer working through much of what I'd inspected last week...had gotten behind with uploading photos. Porridge. Worked through until lunchtime. Aki made noodle soup. Worked until 1630 then prepared dinner. Baked cod fillet, with lemon and fennel seeds, boiled potatoes, and some vegetables on the side. Walked up to Finsbury Park tube station and got on the Piccadilly Line. Met Pete in the Crazy Coqs theatre below Brasserie Zedel where he was due to stage the work in progress of Barb Jungr's Soho song cycle...they are hoping to expand it into a musical theatre piece. Jane Ely and her partner, Ian, joined us at our very atmospheric table in the cabaret theatre bar. Four singers took on different characters, backed by a great three piece band. The singers were fabulous...West End theatre quality. The songs were fab, too...each musically differentiated in style conveying the hopes and fears of the panoply of characters Barb has conjured up. Great stuff...they are off to a flying start...now they need to piece together the book with a narrative through line, and find a producer willing to back them with some financial assistance. We repaired to the Bar Americain next door...the drinks round for the five of us cost me £46!!! Glad we don't do that every day!!! Had a good catch up with Pete and Jane...we go way back to the early 80s and the Tower Theatre in Canonbury. Pete is happy having moved himself, Marigold, and their three girls out to Farnham. Jane is working as a liaison officer for a company who match foster parents with orphaned or abandoned children. Her daughter Jess, by old chum John Christie (deceased) now lives in Darwin, Australia, and Jane is contemplating applying for Australian citizenship, planning to live out there for 6 months of the year, come retirement. We accompanied them back northward on the Piccadilly line, getting home about 2230. A grand, if rather expensive, night out...
