Tuesday 11th March 2025

Alarm at 0830. Breakfasted on the complimentary coffee and wafer biscuit in our rooms.  Packed our bags and checked out. Kath hadn’t slept much, having found her room too cold, and the air conditioning too noisy! Ordered a taxi to Nagano rail station. Aki queued for tickets. Took Bullet Train to Toyama. Arrived at 1230 and walked to the JAL Hotel around the corner.

Left our baggage and went in search of a light lunch in the nearby shopping centre. Walked across to Kansui Park, a man-made body of water off the canal system. At the far end we found ourselves outside the impressive modern building that is the Museum of Art and Design. Ventured inside and paid to view the current exhibition of 20th Century art…Picasso, Dali, Ernst, Warhol et al.

Really enjoyed it. The interiors are great, and the exhibition beautifully curated. Kath struggled to stay awake and kept dozing off in available arm chairs.

Great view over to the Tateyama Mountains from the top floor. Walked back to the hotel and checked into our rooms. Relatively roomy by Japanese standards…much more comfortable than the Tokyo hotel. After sorting ourselves out we went in search of dinner. Ended up in a rather down market joint beneath the railway station.

Kath ordered a large beer! She ate prawn tempura with rice and miso soup…I had a very substandard tonkatsu, while Aki went for a fish stew. Not exactly a culinary hotspot! Walked back to the hotel and flaked out…
