Saturday 15th March 2025

Relatively decent night’s sleep at last. Woke around 0815. Aki made coffee. We ventured out in search of breakfast. Wandered around the large Omicho Market…smell of fresh seafood dominated…live spider crabs, oysters, sea urchins, and octopus. Lots of equally interesting vegetables on display. Eventually found a little modern bakery off the main drag…caught them as they were removing some freshly cooked croques monsieur from the oven…very tasty.

Walked through the pristine grounds of Kanazawa Castle, and on into the famous Kenrokuen Gardens…had to pay to get in, but at £1.50 each, it proved a bargain. Bit cold in the wind in exposed areas of the park, but lots to admire, though much of the trees and shrubs still sporting their winter rope supports. Stopped for tea and mochi.

Exited the grounds, crossing the road to the modern Museum of 21st Century Contemporary Art. Paid to see the permanent display, which included a Korean illegal immigrant dressed as a rabbit in repose, and a ceiling strung with light bulbs that pulsed to the individual heartbeats of the punters…Aki’s looked a bit fast…mine looked a bit sluggish.

Wandered around the Samurai District before walking back to our apartment. I nipped out to the foodhall in the big Miza Department store, bringing cheese and biscuits, nuts and olives, back to the apartment for afternoon snack.

Taxi at 1845 took us to the restaurant Aki had booked for dinner…Kim baled out, as she felt she was coming down with a cold. It was a little local sushi joint the other side of the railway station. Aki was in her element…we blew most of the budget on the fresh hairy crab, shared assorted sushi, and tempura prawns and vegetables, all washed down with a glass of Sapporo lager. Flagged a taxi down to take us back to the apartment, and flaked out in the bath!
